A study undertaken by British health and safety experts and employment law consultants, Protecting.co.uk, has determined that Britain’s workers are at risk from lack of basic emergency training.
The study found that more than more than 75 percent of British workers do not know where to find their nearest fire extinguisher or alarm actuation button. It also uncovered widespread ignorance about workplace emergency exits or the location of the first aid box.
In a telephone poll of over 1100 people who said they worked in a commercial premises, 76 percent said they did not know where to find the fire equipment; 80 percent said they did not know which extinguisher to use on a particular kind of fire; 79 percent said they did not know where to find the nearest fire alarm point; 51 percent did not know the fire evacuation procedures; and 67 percent could not remember the last fire evacuation drill at their place of work.
