Fire & Gas Detection Technologies, inc (Anaheim, CA, USA). today announced it has received Type Approval by DNV, one of the world’s leading classification and certification bodies, for its FlameSpec IR3(-HD) and IR3-H2(-HD) flame detectors for use in ships, offshore units and high speed and light craft.
Hydrogen is a colourless, odourless and non-toxic gas and when mixed with air, quickly becomes highly flammable. The flame is invisible to the naked eye and traditional means of infrared optical flame detection cannot detect it.
Having already been awarded the prestigious Marine Equipment Directive (MED) approval for the FlameSpec IR3(-HD) hydrocarbon flame detectors FGD sought a way to obtain a marine approval for its hydrogen flame detectors. The European standard (EN54-10) does not test device performance for hydrogen fires hence MED approval cannot be obtained in respect of hydrogen fire detection performance.
DNV understood this and the similarities between device types in the FlameSpec family for robustness to environmental (saline atmospheres), mechanical (vibration), and electrical (EMC / RFI) installations. Following a review of compliance with DNV rules and international standards, including flame detector performance to hydrogen flames FGD were awarded the coveted Type Approval.
The Type Approval marks an important step for FGD and the marine industry as it takes steps to adopt hydrogen as a fuel for marine applications. Uniquely, the FlameSpec IR3-H2-HD has the ability to make the invisible hydrogen fire visible to control room operators.
