What is a condensed aerosol in fire industry terms and how does it work?
Condensed aerosol is a two-phased agent consisting of potassium-based solid particles – the active agent – suspended in a carrier gas. Fire suppression is accomplished essentially by interrupting the chemical chain reactions occurring in the flame, and not by cooling and/or depleting oxygen.

The main components of a condensed aerosol fire suppression system are its pre-engineered generators which, when activated, release the fire suppression agent. Each generator is an all-in-one container and is the equivalent of the agent storage tank, piping and nozzles of a pressurized gas system. The complete FirePro fire suppression systems, including fire detection and electronic components, are installed and maintained in compliance with international standards by a network of suitably trained partners in more than 90 countries.
The FirePro range of generators fall under three main categories:
- Standard series – Suitable for Class A, B and C fires, operating at temperatures between -54°C and +100°C, certified for a 15-year lifespan.
- ATEX series – The EX-certified version of the standard series, designed to suppress fires in explosive atmospheres of gas or dust mixtures (Zone 0, 1, 2 and Zone 20, 21, 22).
- HERO series – Manual generators for first responders, a tool used by trained emergency personnel such as firefighters and safety officers. The use of HERO generators buys the critical time necessary for full-scale firefighting operations.
A FirePro suppression system can be configured to include single or multiple generators, depending on the physical and technical parameters of the protected area, such as the class of fire, volume and height. The quantity and model of generators to be used are determined by the agent density required. The needed density differs from one manufacturer to another and is derived from fire suppression tests as per protocols set out by relevant standards such as UL2775 or EN15276, conducted by accredited bodies.
