Easy-to-install solution provides flexible fire protection.
Engineers’ firestop designs may not turn heads in a commercial building project, but it can be what saves lives. Now with 3M™ Interam™ Endothermic Mat (E-Mat), they can easily design for a broad range of applications providing flexible, full-envelope fire protection in critical areas of all types – even areas with space constraints.
Products like gypsum board and cementitious sprays do not offer much flexibility, and can be time-consuming and messy to install. They can require complex pumps, a water supply, heated environments, and careful preparation and masking of surfaces. 3M Interam Endothermic Mat gives builders and architects a better solution for fire protecting conduit, cable tray, and structural steel with a space-saving conformable design. This product is great for meeting the NEC, which requires that conduit from a fire pump room to an electrical control room be fire proofed.
3M E-Mat uses advanced endothermic materials to prevent heat penetration via a chemical reaction that absorbs heat energy. When exposed to high temperatures, the mat releases chemically bound water. This water cools the surrounding materials, significantly retarding heat transfer. With its uniquely conformable construction, the mat helps protect virtually any area in commercial construction applications.
3M E-Mat allows architects and engineers to install a product with the UL mark of certification while enhancing design flexibility. The mat can be easily cut to size, and requires no surface preparation for installation. It is heat absorbing and non-flame supporting, and has an easy-to clean aluminum surface.
This combination of qualities gives architects and engineers new solutions for applications including membrane penetrations, electrical circuit protection and structural steel protection. 3M E-Mat can be installed in a wide range of temperature and humidity conditions using simple hand tools.
“The flexibility of 3M E-Mat makes it ideal for a long list of applications,” said George Yoshida, Business Development Manager, 3M Fire Protection Products. “Architects and engineers now have a truly versatile solution to protect people and property for decades to come.”
